The start of a series

For a long time I've been combining wood and steel. The idea of scaling this concept up has been in the back of my mind for some time as well.

Here's an insight into some of the process involved with this work.

Often I see pieces of wood that inspire me. Here is one such piece of wood. Although I had not seen this piece in person (it's in California) I kept thinking about this form. This particular piece is from redwood log salvaged after being submerged for years in a river. It has hand cut marks that probably date it back to the late 1800's.

With this slab in mind I started a new piece.

Silver soldering the steel parts.

For this piece I decided to learn the technique of French polishing wood. This involves many thin coats of shellac.

After the final coat both the patinated steel and the wood are given several coats of wax to protect the surfaces.

The pieces are then assembled to create the final sculpture.

Slight Bend (slab series), 2017
